• Notes

  WW1 service - Engineer Sapper wounded three times in same battle whilst dismantling barbed wire. He was hit by Machine gun ball, a piece of shrapnel and as he lay wounded a German Officer shot him with a pistol. (They were very close to enemy lines) Bruce, his grandson, kept these bits of metal and the diary (describing his service and after he recovered), through to Turkey until they were lost in a house move. His injuries to his lungs were to leave him disabled and led to his early death. [8]
